Chapter Thirty
Nancy and Corrine were teasing Roxy as she flew around their room, trying to get ready for her date with Thomas. They had never seen their friend flustered before and they were finding it very amusing to fan the flames of her hysteria.
âAre you sure thatâs the right color outfit,â Corrine teased, and Roxy immediately flew to the full-length mirror in the entranceway.
âWhatâs wrong with the color?â she asked, twisting this way and that, looking at the capri-length romper that she had chosen specifically because it matched the color of her eyes. âI thought it was a good color on me.â She searched her friendâs eyes, trying to get a handle on whether Corrine was serious or not.
âSheâs just teasing you,â Nancy confessed on behalf of Corrine. âSheâs just trying to see how rattled she can get you.â
Roxy grabbed a pillow off her bed and threw it at Corrine, who was lounging on her own bed, that she shared with Nancy. âShouldnât you be getting ready for your own date?â
âIâm pretty much ready,â Corrine stated, even though she was still in the hotel-provided bathrobe, with a towel wrapped around her head.
âYouâre pretty laid back,â Roxy said wistfully, wishing that she could be more like her in this moment. It was usually Roxy who was the laidback one and Corrine that was more animated. But Corrine was also the one with more dating experience. Because Roxy was more introverted, the thought of a date, especially with a man she barely knew, was terrifying. She had been asking herself all day, why she had agreed to the date. Trying to calm herself down as she applied her makeup since she really didnât want mascara smeared all across her face, she remembered how safe she had felt around Thomas the previous evening. The memory of their quiet walk along the boardwalk, as he escorted her home from Bugaloe, helped to calm her nerves. She had no idea where he was taking her this evening and suddenly, she was excited to find out.
Corrine had followed her into the bathroom and started to dry her hair with the hairdryer that hung on the wall. She was careful to not blow Roxyâs hair, which she had carefully styled. âI like your hair,â Corrine said, a little louder than her normal voice because of the hairdryer hum.
âThanks,â Roxy answered as she smiled at her reflection in order to highlight her cheekbones.
âItâs different than your normal; softer.â
âYes, I wanted to go with a more feminine look.â
âIt suits you,â Corrine grabbed a hairbrush and ran it through her dark, shoulder-length hair. âYouâre going to do fine tonight,â she said in a softer voice as she turned off the hairdryer.
Roxy nodded, touched by the remark. She sometimes forgot how much she relied on Corrine, on the strength of her friendship. Corrine was the center of their friendship circle, that included Nancy, which Roxy would never have met had it not been for Corrine. She also knew that they sometimes mistook Corrineâs outgoing nature for confidence, which Roxy knew was far from the truth.
